Film Review: Smoke Signals

The story sets itself in an Indian reservation and traces the path of two young native American men in their quest to learn about the world outside the reservation and for one of them in his journey to accept the death of his father.

The story might centralize over the latter's turmoils of accepting his father's demise, however also gave us a glimpse into the daily lives of the native Americans living on the reservation. The most comedic and interesting moment in the film occurred when Victor was trying to teach Thomas, how to be a true native American men. Victor spoke of being stoic and conjure images of being buffalo hunters in order to look tough, while being retorted by Thomas that their tribe were fisherman instead. The moment, introduces the stereotypes of being native Americans and how the media(Hollywood) has ingrained into the minds of many individual the various notions and images associated to native Americans. Although a light moment in the film, the cut shows the social implications within the reservations, with young men like Thomas and Victor, whom are widely exposed to the media's influences, accepted such stereotypes of their own culture, juxtaposing themselves to become or fit the attributes of characters created by hollywood.

Such a situation almost become a satire when Thomas said in another scene, that the funnier thing about native american films occurs when an indian is watching it.
