I don't know if anyone else saw this. But the other night I was watching tv and this commercial came on. It kinda surprised me but I'm glad KY is advertising for not just straight people.

american dream

I completely agree that the American dream is really over rated. When my parents got divorced my mom was working three jobs and we still didn't have a lot of money. People are blinded by the "American dream", people think that in America everyone can have a house and be comfortable as long as you work hard but in reality there are a lot of people that work very hard and still have nothing. Living the American Dream is all about what you're born into, and unless you get lucky you will have a hard time achieving this. Especially if you get out of college and don't have help from your family, you will owe on your school loans and probably have difficulty finding a job. The media doesn't do a good job of showing us how many people are poor and struggling, and because of this we often don't realize how hard it is to get ahead.

America

America is the land of opportunities. People come to America so they can live their dream and be successful. The thing about America is that there is too much competition. Too many people want the same dream as you. When you think about what you want to do with your life, there are thousands more people who want the same thing. Times is hard and only the strong will survive.

I thought this true and relatable to us considering we are all in college. Supposedly anyone can achieve this american dream..but it may not be so easy to achieve with all of our loans from college! This is my last semester and I know I am no where near being able to live the American Dream

American Dream

I've been thinking about the American Dream since yesterdays class and then i started to think about how everything thinks of it as this great life and living happily ever after. I work at a nursing home and day after day i see the same employees working doubles to support their families and working hard to hopefully someday achieve the "american dream." When i see them always at work I think to myself is it really worth it? To be at work 70+ hours a week every week to support your family when in fact all this time they are spending at work they are away from their families. This creates fights and conflict among their families which i hear about constantly. Trying to achieve the american dream may not be worth it afterall if you lose things close to you while trying to get there.

Success

Success to me is achieving your goals and making your dreams a reality. It's being financially stabled and having your career set. Success doesn't happen for all of us. Failure is where no one wants to be, but you have to fail to succeed. You live and you learn to correct mistakes so it won't happen again.

The American Dream

The American dream to me is money, power and respect. With those three things by my side I would feel good and be happy with life. I believe the American dream is different to everyone. Without a strong virtue there is no success. You have to be motivated and be comfortable to succeed in this world.

American Dream

Responded to Sam's post, I agree that the American dream is not set in stone. When you asked for the definition of the American dream today it required us to generalize into on broad dream. The American dream is to be able to support your self and whatever makes you happy. It does not have to be materialistic things or having two and a half kids, but it is having the ability to decide what your dream is. We do not live in a dictatorship where our dreams must remain dreams by rule of the country. The American dream is the ability to have a dream and chase it.

Achieving Success

In class today we pretty much came to the conclusion that the American dream of the past is no longer a valid, attainable goal for everyone. So then next best thing would to be set some decent goals and try to achieve them. Success is a personal definition, in my opinion, and therefore it is attainable for anyone. If you want to be a garbage man, and make a low salary, and you are the best damn garbage man that you can be, then in my book you are successful. Being happy with what you have is the most important thing, and what we should all realize that not everyone is gonna have a beautiful house and fancy car, because it just can't happen for everyone. If you've worked hard for what you have, and are proud of what you've done then you are achieving the "American dream". It is clear that our government and the system they have set in place is not favorable for the majority of Americans. So, we must find happiness in the little things that get us through the day, otherwise your life will be miserable. Time on earth is too short to worry about what you could have or what you could do. Go out and make something happen, or sit back and enjoy what is in front of you, and maybe everything wont seem as awful as it actually is.

More American Dream stuff

My last post came off as real negative as if there was no chance to ever achieve the american dream. Though it can be tough, especially if you come from an underprivelaged family, the american dream doesnt have to be defined as getting rich quickly and having a mansion. A lot of people in the U.S. are perfectly content with what they are doing and how they are living so i believe that the real definition of the american dream should be having a job you enjoy doing even if its low paying and be able to say you are content with what you accomplished in your life, no matter how much money you make. Maybe you help out with community service or raise a family out in the country, whatever floats your boat in regards to happiness

Undocumented

I watched this movie a few weeks ago. Its about a group of college students who want to learn more about the illegal immigration system. They travel to Mexico and try to sneak into American illegally which a large group of Mexicans who are searching for that American dream. They basically risk their lives to come into our country. After they get to the American side, they all pile into a trunk. The driver of the trunk ends up getting shot and it all goes downhill from there. The movie is SERIOUSLY messed up! This group of crazy hillbillies captures this group of immigrant and tortures them and the ones that they don’t kill they keep them as slaves.

At the end of the movie it shows (in real life) how American built the walls between us and Mexico and how people are still risking their lives to come over to America.

American Nightmare

Today in class we talked alot about how the common notion of the American dream is to get rich through your own efforts.  If this dream applies to all Americans, then the wallstreet bankers who manipulated the market into a crash for their own cash would be the winners, right?  They made massive profits for both the companies they worked for and themselves.  Even the ones that got fired escaped the market to their vacation homes paid for by golden parachutes. They have plenty of ability to take care of their families.  Isn't that the American Dream.

I don't really even know how to describe this video. Some of the videos are funny but they are also sad at the same time.
I couldn't believe the one part where the little girl has her cottage and they keep saying how she can live her dreams in this little cottage so she can do laundry and make cupcakes for her little bear friend.

Or the Kelly Ripa commerical, she is cooking, cleaning, taking care of the kids, taking care of the dogs, throwing a party.

La Shawn Barber was extremely annoying!!! "Women are the weaker sex" WTF!! are you kidding me?! She just seems so OKAY with saying that statement.

Clorox Commerical

Not sure if anyone else has notice these new colorox commerical of children pooping their pants.

While watching this commerical I thought, "What if they did this with a little girl and two moms."

Also, I feel like this commerical gives off the image that men can't care of their children correctly. They are talking about cars and how their new mini van handles on the road while ignoring their child.

Bamboozled: My Opinions

In my opinion the movie was a little worse than what actually happened because black people were mocking themselves to all white crowds that were not laughing with them, but at them. I believe that the idea of having blacks put on black face instead of whites was to criticize the blacks that act buffoonish today. With the rise of gangster Hip Hop during this time (early 2000s), I think that Spike Lee wanted to show young people how they look by wearing big gold chains and gold teeth, he is essentially saying to open your eyes, everyone is laughing at you not with you. I believe that he was also criticizing black shows and movies that demean blacks. I believe that he wanted young blacks to see that you represent all blacks in a way, when you dress crazy and act foolish you are basically co signing with these stereotypes that your ancestors tried so hard to defeat.  When whites did black face they were ignorant in their actions and they performed among their peers in which they laughed with them not at them. These minstrel shows were aimed to please white people and humiliate blacks. I think that Spike Lee did a great job in showing how a minstrel show can affect people’s lives; he exposed the world to this cruel act that occurred for over 50 years.
