Racism in prison

The readings have pointed out that, not only will one in four black males be incarcerated at one point in his life, but that one in 17 is in prison right now. Charles Hughes, a California State Prison guard, said "There is no way I would put a white and a black together, I'd be putting my job on the line if I did that". He was referring to the segregation of prison cells. Another C.O. said that not only are cells segregated but at the North Kern State Prison, an entire building is set aside for Hispanics. I believe that the excuse may be to prevent gang violence, since many gang-related deaths occur at high security prisons. Not only are many of these inmates coming from already low-life segregated communitites but they then are many times unjustly put into another racialed community; prison. And that is only reinforced more considering the fact that white guards greatly outnumber non-white prison guards.
