class or caste?

The distribution of wealth in this country seems extraordinarily ridiculous to me. How can it be that such a small percentage of our country holds such a large percentage of our country's wealth? Not only this, but these people have more money than they could possible ever need. Meanwhile, more and more Americans are out of work and falling into debt. Then, to add to this, many Americans are simply unable to obtain the jobs that America values better, and that therefor pays better. Even when the American economy is in an upswing, people cannot obtain to these jobs due to their uncontrollable socioeconomic factors. Then on top of all of this, minimum wage is just so obviously not a liveable wage. This is perhaps the most confusing of all to me. I truly feel that someone working full time at a minimum wage job should be able to support themselves. However, this is just impossible in America.

If you're interested, as I am, in things such as this, I highly suggest the book Nickel and Dimed. This book is written from the view of a reporter that decides to shed her white collar job for a while and work only low paying jobs. Obviously, she only lived the life for a while, she cannot know all the troubles one faces in that position. However, it is very interesting and does give a lot of insight into these problems.
