Reel Injuns

The film industry does seem to portray all Native Americans as one people. We can all picture the stereotypical Indian, but truly there is a ton of diversity amongst Native cultures. From Pocahontas to western films, all Native Americans generally look, talk, and act the same. This stereotypical portrayal is often demeaning and offensive to natives. They are depicted as simple-minded savages looking to kill the white man. Native Americans really have a rich, diverse culture; no two tribes are exactly alike. I believe this "typical Indian" portrayal has stripped Native Cultures of their identities and helped to further oppress Native Americans. Native culture has been hanging by a thread throughout the 20th century. Perhaps more positive portrayals of Indians in films would help to carry on their cultures.
